Representatives from 155 countries and 150 organizations met in 1990 and pledged to provide education for all by the year 2000. This pledge was made at the World Conference on Education for All in Thailand. The intention of this conference was that children and adults alike would benefit from educational opportunities. The World Declaration on Education for All defined a bold, new direction in education. The literacy rate for the entire world is 82%. 87% of all males in the world are literate whereas 77% of all females in the world are literate. It is a common thought that if people were more literate, then the sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy rates would go down.
